iPhone designer Jony Ive joining OpenAI as part of $6.5 billion deal
Former Apple design chief Jony Ive, known for creating the iPhone and iMac, is joining OpenAI through the acquisition of his startup, LoveFrom's io.
The $6.5 billion deal will see Ive and his team lead hardware design for AI-integrated devices. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Ive aim to develop a new class of products that make generative AI more accessible and creative.
"Two years ago, Jony and I started talking about what the future of AI and new kinds of computers was going to look like," Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said in the video. "It became very quickly apparent to both of us that we needed a third company."
With AI, researchers predict the location of virtually any protein within a human cell
MIT, Harvard, and Broad Institute researchers have developed a new AI model, PUPS, that can predict the location of virtually any protein within any human cell. By combining a protein language model with advanced computer vision, PUPS identifies protein locations at the single-cell level—even for previously untested proteins and cell lines. This could accelerate disease diagnosis, drug discovery, and understanding of complex biological processes. The research was published in Nature Methods.

Google DeepMind has launched AlphaEvolve, an AI system that creates and evolves complex algorithms to optimize computing systems. Powered by Gemini language models and evolutionary techniques, AlphaEvolve has boosted Google data center efficiency, enhanced TPU chip design, and sped up AI training processes.

“The best human-AI collaboration can help solve open scientific challenges and also apply them at Google scale,” said Novikov, highlighting the system’s collaborative potential.
