Google DeepMind CEO: World Models Are Key to Reaching AGI

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, believes that world models—AI systems that simulate the structure and dynamics of reality—are showing surprising progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).
He highlights Veo 3, DeepMind’s advanced video model, as a breakthrough example, noting its ability to model “intuitive physics” as a sign that AI is beginning to understand the deeper structure of the physical world, not just generate visuals.
World models have long been part of Hassabis’s vision, tracing back to his teenage experiments with simulation games. This strategy is now central to DeepMind’s AGI roadmap: building agents that learn through interaction, not imitation.
In a recent paper, researchers Richard Sutton and David Silver reinforce this direction, calling for a shift toward experience-based learning. Instead of training on static human data, future AI should develop internal simulations—or world models—to reason, predict, and adapt much like animals or humans do through real-world interaction.
This evolution marks a foundational change in AI development, positioning world models as the bridge between today’s tools and tomorrow’s truly intelligent systems.
NYT Strikes First AI Licensing Deal — With Amazon

The New York Times has signed its first generative AI licensing agreement with Amazon, allowing the tech giant to use Times content—including material from NYT Cooking and The Athletic—across products like Alexa and to help train Amazon’s proprietary AI models.

A new report, China’s AI Infrastructure Surge, reveals the scope of Beijing’s state-led push to dominate global AI—through over 250 AI-focused data centers and a bold expansion into space-based computing.
The report, published by the Special Competitive Studies Project and Strider Technologies, outlines China’s coordinated national effort to build out the physical backbone of AI, driven by both economic and military objectives. China is not just building on Earth: its recent satellite launch by ADA Space and Zhejiang Lab marked the start of a planned 2,800-satellite network to process AI tasks in orbit, using laser links for interconnectivity.
These space data centers aim to enable real-time, autonomous decision-making from space—bringing computation closer to the point of data collection.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has responded with export controls on advanced semiconductors like Nvidia’s top AI chips. But experts warn that conventional tools like sanctions and entity listings may be insufficient to curb China’s momentum. Shell companies, talent recruitment, and global supply chain workarounds remain challenges.
